Steelers’ James Conner: ‘I’ll have a similar role’ in ’19

As we careen toward training camp later this month, certain storylines will whirl quicker around the offseason drumlike a spinning washer before it comes to a stop.
1 story surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers that this offseason is the idea that, for the very first time in Mike Tomlin’s tenure, there could be a running back-by-committee approach into the backfield.

Annually later James Conner was the workhorse prior to becoming injured, the Steelers added rookie Benny Snell and perceive a heartier function for pass-catching back Jaylen Samuels. Discussing with NFL Network to an interview which will air on NFL Total Access on Monday night, Conner indicated he’s preparing to get an identical workload to last year.
“I will have a similar role. I am healthy, first of all, I’m 100 percent healthy now. We’ll cross that bridge when we arrive,” Conner said of the workload this season. “But we have talent in that room. We have Jaylen Samuels who is a runner, a receiver. Benny Snell was got by us. We know the job that he did at Kentucky. He’s a hard-bodied runner, so all those guys will get bits. It is going to be interesting this season just seeing those other guys being powerful.”
The offseason conversation surrounding the backfield — that was kickstarted by GM Kevin Colbert earlier this offseason — would become moot if Conner remains healthy and proves to be the tackle-breaking menace that he was early last season. Throughout his career as head coach, his offense use was favored by Tomlin just one back. With a dual-threat option like Conner, we can visit Pittsburgh lean back toward a system which relies heavily on one runner, with others acting as supplements instead of committee members.
Conner noted that given that it’s still early July, there has been no deep discussion on his function this offseason.
“It belongs week . The game plan will be different every week,” he said. “I know I’ll be a significant part of it and also have a large role. As far as specifics, we do not play with it like that.”
After watching Le’Veon Bell walk from the Antonio Brown commerce, there were questions regarding a gift drain in Pittsburgh, but through the non-padded model of offseason workouts Conner dismissed that notion.
“It’s early. All we had was OTAs, but OTAs were going smooth, the offense was clicking,” he said of his crime without the two former Pro Bowlers. “All our top guys were there. We’ll see. I think we are going to be just fine. No diss to these men. It has been amazing, though, playing for each other.”
Last week, Conner commented on an Instagram article of JuJu Smith-Schuster stating that they were going to”shock the world.” Conner stated after an offseason of being contested, he’s simply showing faith in those players still with the company.
“Not guaranteeing nothing but I believe we have a fantastic chance of going all the way,” Conner said of his comment. “That is what we play , that’s why we appear every day, that’s the ultimate aim, is to get a ring. I know that’s a good deal of folks don’t think we can do it, together with the pieces we dropped, and just ripping us out. We don’t mind that, though. We all know that they’re out we, but that’s why I said we are going to shock them since I don’t think they expect us to do exactly what we’re going to do this season.”
While the offseason began with hype surrounding the Cleveland Browns and queries about the Steelers’ long run, when the regular season begins, there will be plenty of people who believe Pittsburgh can rebound from a down year.
